Rye Castle Museum is an independendent museum run by volunteers and has two sites in Rye: The Ypres Tower and East Street.
Ypres Tower, built in 1250, is the oldest building open to the public in Rye. It was built as part of the town's defences and has had a chequered history as revealed by its interior. In the Tower is a rare smuggling lantern, medieval pottery, a relief map showing the changes to the coastline and a special exhibition of replica medieval weapons and the life of a medieval soldier. It is aimed at children of all ages and you can try and use some of them! From the Tower's balcony you can have a magnificent view over what was once one of the busiest harbours in the country. In East Street, you can see Rye's C18th fire engine, views of the town over the centuries. Cinque Ports regalia, Rye's famous art pottery from 1840 onwards together with some medieval pottery, Rye's maritime past and a special exhibition on Rye between the wars, 1918 - 1939 and the changes that took place during that period. There is also much more about this ancient town. A visit to the museum is a must for anyone who wants to know more about the Rye you will be walking round and enjoying.
